Proof of this wealth was that Sifnos was one of the first places in Greece to mint coins. In modern times the island is known for its unique delicious cuisine, beautiful beaches and pottery. The sand on the island lends itself to clay work very well and thus the island has become one of the most foremost pottery centers in Greece even still managing to retain the interest of the young locals as the tradition lives on.
