Overland Packages - The Botswana Adventure

The highlights include: wild camping, Kalahari Desert, safari viewing in open 4x4 vehicle, bush walks, safari cruise on the Chobe River, mokoro excursion in the Okavango delta area of Moremi, 2 days in Victoria Falls, and Makgadikgadi Pans.

Day 1:
Early departure from Johannesburg, and we travel in the direction of the Botswana border. We install our bush camp in the Kalahari Desert. In the evening we admire the bright stars of the southern hemisphere around our campfire.

Day 2:
We arrive in Maun – the “gateway” to the Okavango Delta. We prepare for the excursion in the delta and organize supplies before going into the wilderness.

Day 3 & 4:
We set up our bush camp in a remote area and explore the delta on mokoro (dug-out canoes) rides and bush walks (subject to the water level of the delta). The bird life is prolific and we take time to simply appreciate the remoteness and serenity of the Okavango.

Day 5 & 6:
Moremi Wildlife Reserve, created in 1968 by the Tawana tribe, is considered by many travellers to be the finest wildlife park in southern Africa. The reserve is situated in the northern corner of the Okavango Delta. It is a pure wilderness area of great beauty, with rich green vegetation, palm trees, teeming with bird life and a vast population of wild animals. We spend our time exploring the reserve in our open 4x4 safari vehicle.

Day 7:
We return to Maun for an optional scenic flight (own expense) over the Okavango Delta.

Day 8 & 9:
The 11600 square-kilometre park of Chobe contains one of the largest concentrations of wild animals in Africa. Vast herds of buffalo, elephant, zebra, kudu, lechwe, puku and many others inhabit the waterways of Chobe. Predators such as lion and leopard are regularly seen. Chobe is famous for its beautiful scenery and magnificent sunsets. We enjoy an early morning safari-drive and in the afternoon, a safari viewing cruise on the Chobe River.

Day 10 & 11:
We travel across the Zimbabwean or Zambian border to Victoria Falls – without doubt one of the greatest and most spectacular sights in Africa, where the waters of the mighty Zambezi River tumble down in continuous thunder. It is known as Mosi-oa-Tunya, meaning “the Smoke that Thunders”. Days spent at leisure for optional excursions. (All meals included excluding 1 dinner).

Day 12:
The Makgadikgadi Pans are the remains of a gigantic ancient lake of 6500 square kilometres where the Okavango River used to flow. The sunset over the pans is unforgettable.

Day 13:
We cross the Limpopo River into South Africa and install our camp at Molala Tau (“the resting place of the lion”). We enjoy the grassy campsite under the shade of acacia trees.

Day 14:
We return to Johannesburg mid-afternoon. (Breakfast and lunch).
